Did you know that the VCU Massey Cancer Center Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Unit has the only pediatric BMT program in Virginia? The BMT Program is a combined adult and pediatric program, which is fully accredited. When pediatric patients go to the BMT Unit, they can expect to stay inpatient for 3-4 weeks. After that, they will visit the pediatric outpatient clinic almost daily for another 3-4 weeks, with continued outpatient follow-up for up to 6 months. BMT patients will not be able to resume their normal lives for up to a year after transplant because of their immunosuppressant therapy. The Jamie Hess Fund provides the resources for doctors to perform needed research to find new or better ways of treating transplant patients.
