August 2019 Art Sessions
For our August Art Session, a volunteer brought two sewing machines. The children learned how to sew an easy project – they made their own pillowcases. The children also made puppets and paintings that looked like ice cream. Our Art Sessions continue to be a popular event for the whole family, even during the summer.
Today's Helping Hero: Maya
Maya published her first book “Flight of Friendship” while battling a brain tumor. Her book is about the importance of friendship. She donated part of the proceeds from the sales of her book to Connor’s Heroes. Maya’s mom presented Celia and Erin with a generous check to Connor’s Heroes.

Hero Squad Member: Dylan
2019 Hero Squad Member & Childhood Cancer Hero
Hero squad member and childhood cancer survivor, Dylan Franklin, shares his journey and passion for Connor’s Heroes mission.
On March 17th, 2009, when I was 17 years old, I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). I began treatment the very next day. Overnight, my life changed from that of a student-athlete to that of a cancer patient. After rounds of chemo over the next months, I learned that the medication was not working as the doctors had hoped. They told me that the best chance for remission was a bone marrow transplant. Luckily, my only brother was a donor match. I received the life-saving transplant on August 28, 2009.
When I arrived at my hospital room on the transplant wing at VCU, I was surprised to find the room decorated in orange streamers (my favorite color) and a pile of gifts left on the bed. The gifts were DVDs, CDs, video games, and other things to help pass the time. They were from an organization that I had never heard of: Connor’s Heroes.
I spent the next 50 days straight recovering in that hospital room. I don’t know if you’ve ever spent 50 days in a hospital, but it gets pretty boring. The gifts and support from Connor’s Heroes were a great comfort and something that helped me to keep my sanity.
Fast forward about nine years – I’m in remission. I graduated from Virginia Tech with a Master’s degree, and started a career in the wild world of public accounting. One of my managers joined the board of Connor’s Heroes. He invited me to their annual Heroes Art Ball. I immediately remembered Connor’s Heroes. After attending the Heroes Art Ball and seeing the ways that Connor’s Heroes helps the families of cancer patients, I wanted to get involved. I was the philanthropy chairman for my fraternity, and I was looking to help those with childhood cancer in my post-grad life. I joined the Connor’s Heroes Art Ball committee for 2019 and helped plan the event. During the ball, I hung out with the “Heroes” who were honored that night. I watched our community raise money for families in need.
Hearing the words “you have cancer” was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever experienced. Helping the families that have to hear those words is the mission of Connor’s Heroes. Connor’s Heroes truly is an amazing organization – I am incredibly happy to be a founding member of the Hero Squad.

Hero Squad
We are so excited to announce our first-ever Hero Squad! Our Board of Directors nominated caring people who are passionate about our community and can inspire others to help children fight cancer. Their mission is to raise $20,000 for the increasing number of children who registered with Connor’s Heroes this year. They have three months to rally their friends, neighbors, family and you. On November 15, we will honor them with a party at Studio Two Three! Don’t leave them hanging. Use the link to add your name to the list of people who want to make a difference in the life of a child battling cancer.

Christmas In July Part 2
Charlie is loving her donut from Sugar Shack Donuts. The donuts were one of many treats that Connor’s Heroes brought to clinic for our annual Christmas In July. Erin and our volunteers toted over boxes with toys, crafts, art supplies, and other surprises. Patients and siblings at clinic were welcome to dive in and fill up a Connor’s Heroes goodie bag. We brought in lunch each day from Jimmy Johns and the popular food cart Christopher’s Runaway Gourmay. Christmas In July are fun days to celebrate with our heroes.
Bucket Brigade at Music For Massey
Cheers to our Bucket Brigade Crew (picture L to R) LeAnn, Erin, Gwendolyn, Mark, Celia & Sharon. The generous concertgoers at this summer’s Music for Massey dropped in close to $1,500 in a matter of minutes. Proceeds will go to the Connor’s Heroes Pediatric Cancer Research Fund. Thank you to Napier Realtors ERA who organized the concert.

Christmas In July Part 1
Connor’s Heroes celebrated Christmas In July! Thanks to our volunteers who made crafts with our heroes and siblings. Thanks to our Program Team (Erin & Fran) for toting in all the supplies, ordering lunches, and bringing much-needed support to our families.
Thomas's Hospital Room
Nothing warms our heart more than when a hero family pays it forward to another hero family. This week, our young hero Lauren and her family decorated the room of a teen boy who will start his bone marrow transplant. Lauren’s family remembers what it was like to be isolated on the 10th floor for an extended period of time. Several years ago, brave Lauren endured her own transplant to treat her brain tumor.
